ENGLISH PRACTICE, BUILT AROUND ANKI

You know it.
Now make
it yours.

Bridge the gap between recognising English and finding your own words.

For adults who understand more English than they can comfortably produce. Start with your own response, work on the language that holds you back, then return to it through listening and spaced review.

01 / THE LEARNING METHOD

Start with a thought.
Build the language for it.

Tarnum is designed around a practical learning loop: attempt, notice, repair and revisit. Open Production gives that work a purpose; focused exercises let you practise its parts.

  1. 01 / INDEPENDENT ATTEMPT

    Say something.

Write a message or speak a response before opening an example. Choose the meaning and wording yourself.

  2. 02 / NOTICE & REPAIR

    Find the gap.

Review feedback or a reference. Try your own correction first, using hints when needed, and select a difficulty to work on.

  3. 03 / FOCUSED PRACTICE

    Work on it.

Recall a phrase with Cloze, build a sentence from meaning, or practise a reply with a clear purpose. Listen and say it aloud.

  4. 04 / SPACING & TRANSFER

    Use it again.

Return to selected material through Anki after a delay. Then try the language in a new situation with your own words.

Retrieve before revealing. Make the attempt visible before consulting a model.

Practise language in context. Link phrases and structures to something you want to communicate.

Separate recognition from use. Include new responses alongside familiar review material.

ONE EXAMPLE SESSION

Decline a request.
Keep the relationship.

A colleague asks you to take on extra work. You need to say no without sounding abrupt.

ILLUSTRATIVE LEARNING SCENARIO
  1. 1

    Write your own reply

Start with the message you would actually send. Keep that first version.

  2. 2

    Choose what to improve

Review the wording and tone. A useful phrase to practise might be I can’t take that on.

  3. 3

    Retrieve it, hear it, rewrite

Recall the expression in context, listen to an example, then write and say your own revised refusal.

  4. 4

    Return with a different situation

Review selected material in Anki. Later, try declining an invitation from a friend, adjusting the reason and register.

This is the intended learning routine, guided by the learner or teacher. The prototype does not automatically link every exercise into this sequence. Learning outcomes have not yet been independently measured.

02 / PRACTISE THE PART YOU NEED

More than remembering.
A place to use it.

Choose a focused exercise for a difficulty you noticed in your own response. Cloze supports recall; translation builds sentences; Forge modes provide context and structure.

These browser previews let you try the exercises. Input stays on this page; only the Cloze phrase is checked here. Full practice and online feedback run in the Anki prototype.

01/ RECALL

Find the phrase
before you see it.

Cloze removes selected words from a sentence. Retrieve the missing language, then compare it with the saved text and hear the complete sentence.

  • Vocabulary and grammar in context
  • An attempt before the reference
  • Audio and spaced repetition

03 / LISTEN TO THE CURRENT PROTOTYPE

Words on a screen.
A voice in your ear.

Three real recordings from the Anki collection. Hear a reply, reuse a pattern, or try an answer before opening the transcript.

These are existing prototype recordings, not ElevenLabs-generated demos. Transcripts come from the corresponding cards.

04 / WHY VOICE MATTERS

Hear the intention.
Practise the response.

In a refusal or a disagreement, the words carry only part of the message. Pace, emphasis and intonation give learners another part to listen for and practise.

We plan to use the ElevenLabs speech API to produce original learning audio with a matching text reference, integrated into Tarnum’s existing Anki exercises.

PROPOSED ELEVENLABS INTEGRATION

Listen before seeing the transcript

Original short passages for EarForge-style listening and transcription, with the text revealed after the learner’s attempt.

Hear language with a purpose

Contextual replies and short dialogues for Prag-Forge: refusals, clarification and disagreement, with delivery appropriate to the situation.

Listen after writing your own answer

Audio examples for selected writing tasks, available after an independent response and useful for a spoken revision.

The samples above are from the current collection. ElevenLabs integration and grant support are planned, not yet secured.

HOW THE AUDIO WOULD REACH LEARNERS

Original script → API generation → transcript and listening checks → audio added to a practice task → reuse in Anki review.

WHAT SUPPORT WOULD ENABLE

Compare voices on representative tasks, replace weak recordings selectively and expand the library. Generated files would be reused for playback, with credits reserved for new material and necessary revisions.

06 / FROM PILOT TO PRODUCT

A routine to come back to.
A library that grows.

Today, Tarnum is a working prototype used by the founder and 20+ learners. The next product step is a clearer setup experience and a subscription offering for adult learners.

PLANNED SUBSCRIPTION

Practice materials
and the tools to use them.

The proposed subscription would combine access to curated practice materials, Tarnum’s Anki templates and tools, and new original tasks with audio.

Scope, pricing and launch date are still being developed. Public paid access is not open.

For the learner
A selection of recall, writing and listening tasks, with references and a repeatable way to revisit difficulties.
For ongoing practice
New original situations and audio examples, alongside improvements to the practice tools and setup guidance.
What the pilot should establish
Which tasks learners return to, where setup causes friction, and whether the proposed subscription is useful enough to pay for. These are questions to test, not established results.

Built for the gap
I kept coming back to.

Recognising a good sentence is one thing. Producing one when you need it is another.

I built Tarnum to work on that gap in my own English practice and in my teaching. I designed the Anki templates and the workflows for recall, writing, listening and review.

I use the prototype myself, and 20+ learners now use Tarnum. Their experience helps me see what is useful, what feels awkward and what to improve next.

Early pilot. A product in development.
Tarnum is an unincorporated founder-led project for adults aged 19+. The current focus is refining the practice with the pilot students and preparing the subscription offering described above.

A FEW PRACTICAL DETAILS

A clearer picture.
Before you start.

Can I join the pilot today?

20+ learners are using Tarnum in the early pilot. Public sign-up is not open yet. You can email hello@tarnum.uz or contact the founder through LinkedIn to discuss the project.

Do I need Anki?

Yes. The working prototype runs in Anki. The examples on this website are small browser adaptations, not a connection to your Anki collection. Tarnum is an independent project.

What does the feedback actually check?

In Anki, Cloze and translation compare with saved references; alternative wording can still be valid. Writing Frame checks track fixed words and order, while Forge modes use specific text rules. Open Production requests online AI-assisted feedback. The website only checks the fixed Cloze phrase and reveals examples. These checks do not certify language level or assess pronunciation.

Is ElevenLabs already integrated?

No. The playable recordings are from the existing collection. ElevenLabs is being considered for original listening exercises and contextual audio examples in a future release.

Is Tarnum a paid product?

The proposed subscription combines curated practice materials, the Anki templates and tools, and new original tasks with audio. Pricing and scope are being developed; public paid access is not open.
